What We Believe

As United Methodists, we believe ...

... that we are created by God as persons of worth, and that God is active in our lives today.

... that God in Jesus Christ loves us and has freed us from the deadly separation of Sin.

 As  People, we believe ...

... that we can make a difference in our community by sharing the Good News with others through care and Christian love.

... that we can make a difference in our world by sharing the Good News with others through a perspective of grace and not judgment.

We also believe ...

John Wesley and the early Methodists were particularly concerned about inviting people to experience God’s grace and to grow in their knowledge and love of God through disciplined Christian living. In a time when only kings and  noblemen received an education, they encouraged all people to study the Bible methodically (hence the name, "Methodist"). (To learn more about Methodist teachings, visit www.umc.org.) Methodists also use reason in reading and interpreting scripture--in other words, God gave us all a brain, and he expects us to use it!

Methodists have two sacraments: Baptism and Communion.

We believe a person can be baptized only once in their life.  It cannot be repeated, although it may be reaffirmed. It's also the beginning of a person's faith journey.

We practice "open Communion," welcoming all who love Christ, repent of their sin, and seek to live in peace with one another. It's God's Table, so it's open to anyone who wishes to partake, regardless of race, age, marital status or sexual orientation. You don't have to be baptized, and you don't have to be a confirmed Methodist. It's a "family meal" of bread and unfermented grape juice.

Our vision: To be an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, socially just community of faith in the United Methodist tradition in Northeast Minneapolis.

What is a Methodist?

"A Methodist is one who attempts to live by the method laid down in the Bible."
